Yet Another Random Candy and Quick Update

First of all, I hope everyone enjoys this picture of an Indian sweet.  Called Pistapakita (as sounded out to me by the shop owner) this brightly-colored dough-based sweet caught my eye in a candy store in Jaisalmar.  Of course, Jaisalmar isn’t famous for its candies, but rather the camels.  Still, this candy was pretty good!  Although I have to admit I thought the dough was my much-loved sweet sticky rice at first, so the crumbly sweetness was a slight disappointment.  The dough is covered by an edible silver foil and a maroon red icing made of condensed milk.  I believe it’s Bengali in origin, as is much of the candies in Indian. Out of India… But Where Next?

Well, I spent about 6 weeks in India and left, I’ll admit it, a little early. For one thing, they don’t really “do” candy.  For another, I (sorry!) didn’t really like India.  I know, I know… all  travelers are supposed to have love/hate relationships with the country, eventually falling in love with the “realness” and grittiness and color and spice that is Incredible!ndia.  And if you don’t fall in love with it, it’s because you didn’t stay long enough to get over the dirt and smell and shit and urine and hassle and pollution and meet the “true India.”  Eh. Results: Turkish Delight Candy Contest!

Well, I’ve already mailed small prizes to everyone who participated in the Turkish Delight contest (hopefully they’ve all arrived safely!) but I’m sure everyone was eager to know what the actual correct answers were.  Thanks to the participants and next time I’ll make the contest easier! (more…)

Quick Thoughts on Israel and India

After Syria and a quick detour to Lebanon (to be written about later!) I met up Kate, a friend from college, and attempted to get into Israel.  I very nearly failed.  To future travelers: going to Syria and Lebanon before Israel is really asking for a hassle at the border… but at least they do finally let you in, as opposed to doing it in the other direction!
