Thai Treats - Yummy!

Well, returning to Thailand to meet my little brother reminded me of some of the delicious Thai treats I never really commented on here.   Fortunately, because I’m biking I feel that not only is it ok for me to eat many delicious sweets - it’s actually healthy to consume lots of calories!  That’s how it works, right?

It is in Sukhothai that I first try a sweet that is to become one of my favorites: the delicious, heavy, energy-packed sticky rice sweetened with coconut milk. Yum! I seek this out from street stalls throughout Thailand, and find it especially prevalent at night markets. The sticky rice is a bit gelatinous, but I love chewy sweets and the coconut milk and red beans add a nice flavor to the rice.

Another amazing Thai specialty is the banana pancake, a common street food in tourist areas but even tastier in cities where no tourists ever seem to visit. Sizzled in giant hunks of butter and oil, further drenched in condensed milk, an egg scrambled in for fun… I could never resist this sweet treat! And I wonder why I haven’t lost any weight since starting to bike!

Anyway, I’m out of Thailand - at least for a bit! - and now biking through Malaysia.  Fortunately, while I’ve had to say goodbye to the banana pancake (or so it seems) I have made the acquaintance of the delicious ABC.  I’m not sure what it stands for yet, but it is Delicious.  Similar to my favorite Vietnamese dessert che, but with ice cream added in for fun - yummy!  It’s kind of a miracle I’m able to bike at all with the ridiculous amounts of sweets I’m eating here.  I’ll be heading home for an intermission soon, and then starting to cycle in South America!  While at home, hopefully I’ll be able to update the blog with some of my adventures from Southeast Asia.

It’s amazing how sweets are universal and how different they are from one culture to the next. I can’t wait for you return to the states to hear all the details to your travels.
I’m glad you’re being such a good big sister!
Love,
Mom
