I’m in Calcutta, India right now… the capital of sweets in India!  I’ve visited a few candy shops and witnessed some of the much famed Indian love for formality.  The candy here is very rich and milky… quite a change from the honey, pastry, and nuts of the Middle East!   I think I’m going to cut my stay in India down by a few weeks… I’ll have managed to visit most of the places I have interest in by then, and can spend some extra time in Southeast Asia.  Plus, the rats here scare me.  Happy New Years everyone!

PS:  My New Years Resolution is to write more in this thing!

I got my sweets! It’s so exciting to get an air mail package - especially because it confused the heck out of my mom. Absolutely delicious - I’m actually eating them right now! Thank you, and I hope Asia treats you well.

Hi Malena! So enjoying your blog! While you are in India please try my favorite sweet, Soan Papdi. Cardamom flavor, light and sweet and flakey and sooooo goood! You can buy it from street vendors or packaged in a shop, Haldimans makes a very good one. Enjoy!

I got my sweets, then went out of town and my cat sitter (or maybe my cat) ate them! I’m bummed!
It was still exciting to get a package though- thanks!!

Thanks for all the comments, per norm!

Glad to hear my candy arrived safely everywhere… although I’m sorry you didn’t get a chance to eat it JamieO! I bet it was the cats… the Egyptian ones really liked those cookies when I was packing them up.

Eshta, thanks for commenting + I’m glad you’re enjoying the blog. I’ll definitely try some Soan Papdi, as it sounds really good! I’m mostly had the milky fudge so far, and I have to admit its not my favorite flavor.

I second the cat thing. The air-mail envelope has been sitting in a box, and today I found one of the cats eating it. Both the envelope, and the box it had been sitting in.

Speaking of air mail, your route took you through PA, but not the eastern part, where we have some of the most classic and iconic American candies (Hershey’s, Peeps, salt water taffy…). I thought I could send you some back - but the envelope only has a town, not a street address. If you want to email me your addy, I’ll send you some Philly candy!
