I grabbed some of the famous (infamous) black licorice while I was in Amsterdam, along with a cannibis flavored lollipop. I have yet to eat that, but I did try the licorice. The small, dull black pieces were “double extra salt” and absolutely repulsive. Even worse than the cricket!
In short, I cannot recommend this candy. Partly because I hate black licorice, and partly because adding salt to black licorice doesn’t improve the taste. It was rather like chewing on a salt lick.
I’m in Paris right now! If anyone has any suggestions for things to do or candies to eat there, make sure to comment.

I agree! Black licorice is already nasty. Add salt? What do they think it is? A Margarita? How misguided! Is that the best candy of the Netherlands? Or do you have to smoke their candy in Amsterdam? (Just kidding)
Your mission, should you choose to accept it: Eat lots of fancy French food.

I wouldn’t try the lollipop. Probably tastes like dirt! LOL I have a French co-worker, I will see what he says

black licorice isn’t so bad.
you gonna swap me next easter?

Trust me, the black licorice was bad! And it’s definitely the most traditional candy of the Netherlands. I believe the smoked kind is the most popular though…

Great blog! There is great hot chocolate to be had at Angelinas. Have fun!
PS found your blog because I do love all black licorice!

So…. does the cannabis flavored lollipop really taste like cannabis?

Hey Malena,
I remember eating Langue du chat when I was in France. Absolutely delicious semi-sweet chocolates, long and thin–like a cat’s tongue!

I believe that Malena’s dislike of Black Licorice is a Freudian rebellion against her parents, both of whom enjoy this delicacy which is certainly exits at the apex of the candy hierarchy (note how I capitalize the very name.)
On the other hand, I have had salted Black Licorice, and I wouldn’t recommend to anyone for anything. At the least, it is the work of the devil.

Salted licorice sounds gross to me, but I think regular, sweet black licorice is WICKED TASTY! Like chewing on rootbeer. Delectable! (wish I had me some black twists or licorice bridge Mix or Good-N-Plenty right about now)

Sparkina - Ew! I’m also admittedly not a fan of the regular black licorice, which might have colored my perception of the black stuff. Funny how everyone’s tastes are different!

A real Dutch guy here, and as a matter of fact, I’m eating salted licorice right now :P. I think it’s really good.
Sorry for the late comment xD.

Kevin - thanks for commenting! I think maybe the salted black licorice is an acquired taste… and I have no real interest in acquiring it ![]()

i was just looking for the most wonderful black licorice that i had a couple of years ago in paris
it was long and soft and filled with all colors
of whatever? we all loved it. they sell it at the
train station to london, and in many places. we had some at our hotel.
it’s usually on a cart or kiosk. that type of thing.
couldn’t get enough and now my friend will be getting there in a month and will try to find it for me.
if you do find something like what i’m referring to you must try it and if you can get a card and
getback to me. i would be ever so happy
thank you and enjoy.
Malena loves candy. And travel. And both together. And thus, this site was born.
