So, in Oaxaca a fairly common “treat” available for snacking is… crickets! Ew! I’m not sure if this qualifies as a candy or not, but I’ve wussed out of eating any to date. For the sake of the blog, do I need to try one?? Comment to let me know!

Yes, Malena - for the sake of the blog you should try it. Might I remind you of the classic, Green Eggs and Ham?
Happy trip!

Are they sweet or salty. If sweet, you have no way out of it!

You have no choice. For the woman who would not eat calamari, this is your chance to redeem yourself!

No Calamari??? Definitely must try the Crickets…

They are just fine and you should try them just for fun. If they are like the ones I have had before they taste a lot like fries…. extra crunchy fries ![]()

Definitely go for it, for the sake of the blog. Besides you probably need some extra protein in your diet after all of that CANDY!!!!

Go for it Malena!

Yes, Malena you must try one! Personally, I’m too afraid to ever knowingly eat a huge insect, so I’m looking to you for courage and inspiration! ![]()

Malena, You talked about those grasshoppers for a looooonnnnnnggggg time. Here’s a suggestion: shot of tequila, grasshopper, shot of tequila, grasshopper, shot of…j.k.!
Which reminds me of a story I heard. A grasshopper walks into the bar and the bartender says “We have a drink named after you.” The grasshopper, surprised, answered “You have a drink named Irving?”
ba dum BUM! (rimshot)
But seriously, why would you want to swallow a grasshopper anyway? So that you have internal locust of control?
Which reminds me of the question: what’s green and can jump a mile in a minute? A grasshopper with hiccups.
wha wha wha WHAAAAA……..
And, as kind of a former Texan, I leave you with another story. A Texan farmer goes to Australia for a vacation. There he meets an Aussie farmer and gets talking. The Aussie shows off his big wheat field and the Texan says, “Oh! We have wheat fields that are at least twice as large”. Then they walk around the ranch a little, and the Aussie shows off his herd of cattle. The Texan immediately says, ” We have longhorns that are at least twice as large as your cows”. The conversation has, meanwhile, almost died when the Texan sees a herd of kangaroos hopping through the field. He asks, “And what are those?” The Australian replies with an incredulous look, “Don’t you have grasshoppers in Texas”?
Go for it, Malena!

Yum. Crickets. It’s my one real weakness, I love them. Either on their own or coated with honey and dipped in sugar. Sweet and crunchy, delicious.
Really? No, don’t be daft.

you can tell he went crazy with all of the caps and whatnot, you must malena. you must.
plus, this gives me one more thing to brag about.
“yah, my sister’s in mexico, AND she ate a cricket. read her blog.”

Of course you should! (Advice from someone quite envious of your trip. Translation: Are you kidding? I wouldn’t do that.)

I always can try new things just because it’s logical if the people there eat them it can’t be that bad! That’s the way I see it anyway.

Hmm, thanks to all the encouragement I bought a little bag… now I just have to get through the matter of eating the damn things. Or at least, trying one of them before vomiting it back up and swearing “never again.”
I will keep the blog updated, of course!

Hey Malena!
You should definitely give it a try! I’ve heard they’re actually quite delicious and give you a boost of energy. Hearsay, perhaps? =)
Keep up the awesome posts! I’m looking forward to reading more of your travels. Living vicariously through your blog, no doubt. Haha ^.~

Oh by the way when we were still in Ohio, we had this big cicada thing where this one kind only hatches every 17 years. Everyone was munching them down! Especially the teenagers on a church trip we took. They said they weren’t too bad. I on the other hand, would be the person to get kicked off the island for a weak stomach!!!

Grandpa says “If it doesn’t kill you than eat it!”
Grandma says “She wouldn’t try them!”

Don’t do it Malena! I wussed out when served scrambled eggs laced with purple calamari in Peru (the cook described it as “just like a shrimp omelette”). I say it’s not worth losing your lunch over. Besides, you’ve probably already ingested some bugs in that textured, grainy chocolate! Why not send some of those crunchy treats to friends and family who have been urging you to do the dirty deed.
Uncle Fred says you should eat the crickets, guts and all…No guts, no glory!

“do I need to try one??” No!!
You are the one traveling the world to do the taste testing. How am I going to know whether I should buy a bag of crickets next time I get the chance? If you don’t give them a thumbs up or a thumbs down, us common folks will never know if we are missing an exotic sweet delecasy or a the rancid flavor of squishy bug guts.
So, to answer your question, do not eat just one. You should finish the whole bag! First I would try one plain. If that isn’t so good, try adding some sugar; that seems to be your style. If that isn’t so good, try dipping them lime juice. Let us know which is the best way to enjoy a snack of fresh crickets!

Is there an expiration date on a bag of crickets?
Good luck!

Everyone, thank you so much for the comments! As you’ll be able to see, I did write a second entry on my experience with crickets ![]()
Malena loves candy. And travel. And both together. And thus, this site was born.
